Building resilience from grain to glass.

About us

Great Lakes Malting Company is an independently-owned malt house located in Traverse City, Michigan. Since 2016, we have been proudly producing and supplying an assortment of malted grains to the brewing and distilling industries across the Midwest. Our mission is to supply the highest quality malt while providing unparalleled service and an unwavering commitment to supporting local agriculture.

Our Mission

Currently, we estimate that more than 95% of malt that is used by Michigan craft beer and spirit producers is sourced from outside of the state or even the country. We’re here to address this missed opportunity for our agricultural industry. Barley and other small grains provide for an optimal crop rotation for our farmers to engage in sustainable land-use practices. By sourcing grains that are grown and processed locally, we can better support our farms and allow our beer and spirits to be made more sustainably, while truly embodying the concept of “craft.”

Sustainability

Sustainability and capturing the true flavor and spirit of the Great Lakes State is at the heart of what we do. We are driven to cultivate authentic connections between Michigan Brewers and Distillers with Michigan Farmers.

By sourcing grain and producing malt locally, we are shortening the supply chain and reducing the carbon footprint for transporting these ingredients. This ensures our malts are fresh and more flavorful, from farm to glass.

The further malt has to travel, the less fresh and flavorful it is.

Our malts travel less than 250 miles.
